IoT SIM cards for business

Trackers, card machines, alarms, meters and sensors all need a connection, but not a phone plan. An IoT SIM card is built for devices that send small amounts of data, often from awkward places, in large numbers.

In short

An IoT SIM card (also called an M2M SIM) is a SIM for machines rather than people: trackers, payment terminals, alarms, sensors and CCTV. IoT SIMs usually carry little data, come in rugged or embedded formats and are managed in bulk through a portal. We can help you source IoT SIMs for your devices, with the options confirmed at quote.

What is an IoT SIM card?

IoT stands for the Internet of Things: everyday equipment that connects to the internet to report or be controlled. M2M (machine to machine) is the older name for the same idea. An IoT SIM card connects that equipment to a mobile network so it can send data back to a system without a fixed line or Wi-Fi.

Technically an IoT SIM does the same job as the SIM in your phone. What differs is how it is designed, sold and managed. A phone SIM is built around one person making calls and using apps. An IoT SIM is built around a device sending small, regular bursts of data, often for years, sometimes from a cabinet, a vehicle or a field, and usually as one of dozens or thousands of identical SIMs.

IoT SIMs are a specialist kind of business data only SIM. If your devices are tablets, laptops or routers, a standard data SIM is usually the better fit.

IoT SIM vs normal SIM

Phone SIMIoT SIM
Used byA person, in a smartphoneA machine: tracker, terminal, alarm, sensor
Calls and textsYesUsually no; some support SMS for device commands
Data per SIMLight to heavyUsually very light
Physical formatStandard plastic SIM or eSIMRugged, industrial-grade or embedded chip SIMs
LifespanReplaced with the phoneOften stays in the device for years
ManagementOne user, one lineMany SIMs managed in bulk through a portal
Coverage needsWhere people goWherever the device sits, including remote spots

The practical result is that IoT SIMs are usually bought and managed as an estate rather than line by line. The questions that matter are how many devices, how much data each one sends, where they are, how long they will be in service, and who needs to see which SIMs are online.

What businesses use IoT SIMs for

  • Vehicle telematics and tracking: location, mileage and driver behaviour data from vans, trucks, plant and trailers
  • Payment terminals: portable card machines that take payments away from a counter or Wi-Fi
  • Alarms and security: intruder and fire alarm signalling, door entry systems and lone worker devices
  • CCTV and cameras: remote cameras on building sites, car parks and rural premises (these use more data than most IoT devices)
  • Sensors and meters: temperature, flood, air quality, fill-level and energy monitoring
  • Digital signage and kiosks: screens, lockers and vending machines that need content updates and status reports

Some of these devices were installed years ago and may rely on 2G or 3G. Mobile UK, the operators' trade body, says all the mobile providers have confirmed to the UK Government that they do not plan to offer 2G and 3G services beyond 2033, and that an older device which cannot use 4G or 5G will need replacing to keep accessing data. If you run older alarms, trackers or terminals, it is worth checking what technology they use now.

Rugged, embedded and multi-network IoT SIMs

IoT SIMs come in more formats than phone SIMs, because the devices they go into face heat, cold, damp and vibration.

Rugged and industrial-grade SIMs

These look like normal SIMs but are made to tolerate harsher conditions. EE Business, for example, offers IoT SIM cards that it describes as ruggedised by design: made to be anti-corrosive and to withstand harsh conditions. It also says UK and global roaming SIMs are available, with connected devices monitored through a single portal.

Embedded SIMs

Some devices have the SIM as a chip soldered to the circuit board instead of a removable card, so it cannot shake loose or be taken out. Many of these use eSIM technology, so the network profile is loaded remotely. The device maker decides whether a device uses a removable or embedded SIM.

Multi-network IoT SIMs

Some IoT SIMs are designed to connect to more than one mobile network, using whichever signal is available where the device sits. This can help devices in places where coverage varies, such as vehicles crossing the country or equipment in rural locations. Our page on what a multi SIM is explains how this differs from the other meanings of "multi SIM". Whether a multi-network option suits your devices, and is available, is something to confirm at quote.

How to choose an IoT SIM

  1. List the devices: what they are, how many, where they are and how long they will be in service.
  2. Find out how much data each type sends in a month. The device maker or your current bills will tell you; most send very little, cameras send much more.
  3. Check what network technology the devices use (2G, 3G, 4G or 5G, and any low-power IoT options) and whether any need replacing.
  4. Check coverage at the device locations, not just at your office. Remote and indoor locations are where IoT connections most often struggle.
  5. Decide how you will manage the SIMs: who can see which are online, who can suspend a lost one, and how alerts reach you.
  6. Agree the commercial basis: per-SIM plans, pooled data across the estate, contract term and what happens when devices are added or retired.

Pooled or shared data is common for IoT, because many devices use a little and a few use more. Our guide to business SIM only plans explains shared and individual allowances in general terms.

How we help

IoT is a specialist area and the right answer depends heavily on the devices. We can help you work out what you need and source SIMs for it:

  • Map your estate: what is connected now, on which networks and on which SIMs, including older 2G and 3G devices
  • Size the data: from the device maker's figures or your existing bills
  • Check coverage where the devices are: using each network's coverage checker for the exact locations
  • Source suitable SIMs: standard, rugged or eSIM, on a network that fits, with the options confirmed at quote
  • Keep records: which SIM is in which device, so lost or retired devices can be dealt with quickly

Contact us with a short description of your devices and where they are, and we can suggest how to approach it.

How Forever Communications helps with business SIM only

We help UK organisations choose, switch and run business SIM only plans, data SIMs and eSIMs for the phones and devices they already own.

  • Start with what you have: we look at your current contracts, end dates, users, devices and how much data people really use before suggesting anything new
  • More than one network: we supply SIM only plans on EE Business and Three Business, and we can also supply O2 Business and Vodafone Business, so you can choose by coverage where your people work
  • Keep your numbers: we help you plan the move with PAC codes or STAC codes so existing business mobile numbers come with you
  • SIMs for every device: voice SIMs, eSIM SIM only that works with your device management, business data only SIMs for tablets, routers and vehicles, and fleet SIM cards on one account
  • Controls that suit a business: we can help you set up spend caps, bars and user changes through the network's own business tools

Forever Communications is part of Forever Group. Plans, terms and pricing are confirmed at quote, so contact us and we will set out the options that fit.

Frequently asked questions

What is an IoT SIM card?

It is a SIM designed for machines rather than people: trackers, payment terminals, alarms, sensors, meters and cameras. IoT SIMs usually carry small amounts of data, often come in rugged or embedded formats and are managed in bulk through an online portal.

What is the difference between an IoT SIM and a normal SIM?

Both connect to a mobile network. A normal SIM is built for one person using a phone, with calls, texts and data. An IoT SIM is built for devices sending small amounts of data, often for years, in large numbers, so it usually has no voice service, tougher formats and bulk management tools.

Is an M2M SIM the same as an IoT SIM?

In practice, yes. M2M (machine to machine) is the older name for SIMs that let devices talk to systems without a person involved. IoT SIM is the more common term now.

Can I use a normal data SIM in an IoT device?

Often it will work, especially for devices that use more data, such as routers or cameras. For large numbers of low-data devices, or devices in harsh conditions, an IoT SIM with rugged formats and bulk management is usually a better fit.

Will the 2G and 3G switch-off affect my devices?

It may. Mobile UK says the mobile providers have confirmed to the UK Government that they do not plan to offer 2G and 3G services beyond 2033, and that a device which cannot use 4G or 5G will need replacing. It also says your operator will contact you if you are affected. Check what technology your trackers, alarms and terminals use now.

What is a multi-network IoT SIM?

It is a SIM designed to connect to more than one mobile network, using whichever is available where the device is. It can help devices in vehicles or areas with patchy coverage. Whether it suits your devices is worth confirming before you buy.
